Study Clean – Stories from Swiss Hotel School Students

Study clean could be the slogan of IMI BA student Agnes Chee. She was surprised about the cleanliness and the well organized lifestyle during her studies in Switzerland cleanest city Luzern. For a project during her Bachelor Studies at IMI University Centre, she started a blog on cleanliness in Switzerland.

One of the subjects to be found on the blog is for example drinking water. !!You can drink from the `tap`!!! The water that comes out of Swiss taps is as pure as bottled mineral water and 500 times cheaper. Even in the old city centre the public street-fountains, almost always gush with pure spring water.

The Swiss attach a lot of importance to recycling. Ordinary citizens are encouraged to recycle as much as possible. In many cantons householders pay a tax according to the volume of rubbish they put out for the dustmen to collect. This acts as an incentive to dispose of anything recyclable at recycling points for which they do not have to pay. The Swiss are champion recyclers. In 2003, 47% of all urban waste was recycled. A new Swiss record. They recycled 70% of paper, 95% of glass, 71% of plastic bottles, 85-90% of aluminium cans and 75% of tin cans.

Did you know that: Switzerland is ranked number three in the `quality of life index 2010`. And that part of the ranking is based on for example the quality of drinking water and recycling.

Cheers to the Swiss! They definitely know how to take care of their environment. Now, if only half of the world would do what the Swiss are doing, we would definitely have a much better world right now… Thanks for this very nice post, it made my day! Good news like these tend to lift up my spirits =)
